Great Business Week article

This weeks edition of Business Week (paper and online edition) has a great review of the best products of the year. All from a design prospective. My favorite was the new shower head. That company made a very common, well established item, better. That is innovation!

Ipod Headphones

This has bugged me ever since I got my Ipod. On all headphones (every brand) there is a little 'L' and 'R' for left and right. The Ipod headphones also have the 'L' and 'R', however there are covered over by the black foam covers. In order to see the letters you have to slide the foam back ever so slightly. This may not sound like a big deal but it can get annoying and requires two hands. For an otherwise incredible device this is something that can be improved very easily.

Zappos.com

I was looking for new pair of shoes and went back to Zappos where I ordered my last pair. I order on Sunday night and had my pair by Tuesday. I did not like the style so I went online printed a return label (for UPS) and placed my next order. I dropped off the package at our company dock for UPS pickup. In all I did this three time and every time they had my package at my door before I expected them. All in all and excellent experience even though I could not find anything I liked.

Impressive companies

I have started to keep track of companies that perform exceptionally well, beyond most expectations. Everyone knows about dell.com and their incredible ordering and delivery system. What I will try to do is bring forth companies that are less known but perform exceptionally well.

Scary Home Intruder

Recently I had the management of our complex walk right in to our unit. Not sure what he was thinking but I am sure that he is at least supposed to knock. The only thing that kept him out was that little chain that I sometimes slip on. When I went to confront him right away, he brilliantly said 'sorry but the chain was on' [sic] , DUH!. I am still not sure what he meant by that. I am still debating whether I should file some kind of complaint with anyone, or just let it slide. Is it at all worth it. Well it was a lesson nonetheless, still kinda freaky to have someone just walk in you home.

Brilliant Quote

"I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said."
-Alan Greenspan

This is one of my all time favorite quotes!!

Hot Lunch

I have stumbled upon a pretty cool technique for hot lunches at work. Here I am eating a nice grilled cheese sandwitch without using a joule of power. It started like this.
I like cheese and I like lunch fast. So in my morning haste I toss six slices of cheese into a large Ziplock back along with six slices of frozen bread. Normally by they time I eat lunch the bread is defrosted I slap the two together around lunch time and wala!, I have a very boring but tasty and filling lunch. On this particular morning I left my lunch in the car. Upon retrieval I found a glob of cheese next to a clump of soggy bread simmering in the sunlight. I was pretty hungry and upset and would have to live on coffee for the rest of the day. But being the resourceful one I decided that the sun that got me here would be the sun to save me. I broke (squished) apart the cheese spread it around the bread and put it back in the bag to 'bake'. Thirty minutes later I was enjoying a nice hot grilled (sunned) cheese sandwitch.
I think I will try it with other foods too.
Stay tuned!

Worker Productivity

The other day I was thinking about the productivity levels today in the business world.
In days before computers we all know that getting anything done took lots of time and lots of money. I'll leave it to the MBA's to give you the formulas. We all know that business today moves at the speed of light, etc etc... However I have found that tasks or projects that cannot benefit from advances in technology and still have to be done manually, are still expected to be completed in a very short pressurized amount of time. For many this is the cracking point and the either remain at very low level jobs or move on and hope that can take the pressure. Personally I thrive on the lightning fast actions regardless of method (high tech or low tech). But there are time it seem that this could be counterproductive as a business overall. I am still trying to find the best happy medium.

Nasty Looking Guy

I just found this guy under my chair, he has been hounding my wife for a couple of days now.
No idea what kind of spider this is but if you can ID it more power to you.
He is gone now and is sleeping with the 'fishies' (via toilet 'B')

We are ready for any weather.

Dumpster full of someones stuff.
By the time i took the picture most of the bags where put inside the dumpster, Monday morning it will be gone

So sad!

Well, what do you know we are having a tornado watch on this very sticky warm day here in lower Michigan. I'll let you know if it actually hits.
In other news, a tenant was evicted this week and the entire contents of their apartment is sitting by the dumpster. It is very sad when these things happen. However the landlord does run a business so who can blame him. Overall its a sad sight to see. I post pictures when I can.
